Skopje is the capital of and largest city in the Republic of Macedonia, with more than a quarter of the population of the country, as well as its political, cultural, economic, and academic centre. It was known in the Roman period under the name Scupi.

Skopje is political, economic, cultural and academic center of Macedonia, known as early as the Roman period under the name of Scupi. Later, extending to both sides of the River Vardar, the town acquired its Slav name of Skopje. The city has experienced a swift development, particularly since the Second World War. This trend was interrupted in 1963 when it was hit by a disastrous earthquake. Today Skopje is a modern city, which is becoming an important diplomatic center in the Balkans.

Macedonia remains to be the main natural bridge open for all movements from the south towards north and from the east towards the European west. On the transit north-south route, extending to a length of about 200 kilometers, numerous facilities are located along the modern highway, equipped with accommodation capacities, restaurants, and shops, offering full range services to the tourist passersby.

The most significant transit center in Macedonia is Skopje, which attracts a great number of foreign tourists by its tourist possibilities and cultural monuments. The remaining attractive facilities along this transit route are the motel Macedonia, near Veles, including an auto-camping site, the motel-restaurant near Gradsko, the hotel and the auto-camping site near Negotino, and the hotel Jugo, near Gevgelija, located by the very border crossing from Macedonia.
